Town Toenisvorst - the apple town on the Lower Rhine

Tönisvorst consists of two districts, the former independent villages St. Tönis and Vorst.

The rural shaped Tönisvorst still has little industry. Fruit, flower and vegetable growing are an essential characteristic of strong agriculture. On the fertile soil one will find the classic Lower Rhenish crop rotation of grain and sugar beet.

Well known are the Medicine aid organisation MEDEOR as well as the Future-Store of the Metro department chain Real.

Fruit has been grown for generations at the St. Töniser Obsthof on the Lower Rhine near Krefeld. It has shaped with its apple trees the landscape in Tönisvorst, which can call itself rightly 'The apple town on the Lower Rhine'.

The motto of the St.Töniser Obsthof: 'Tasting welcome'. You can able taste apples in the farm shop but also straight from the tree.

The last brewery in St. Tönis, the brewery Rixen, closed in the mid-80ties. As there hasn't been a local brewery anymore strong beer consumption has gone down and the tendency has changed to Pils, a lighter beer. The typically Lower Rhensih cuisine is of course also at home in Tönisvorst. Here 'Himmel und Erde' (heaven and earth) is available: fried black pudding with a mix of cooked apples, potatoes, onion and bacon. Whereby black pudding is called 'Föns' in Tönisvorst. In addition there is also 'Panhas' a solid cooked sausage broth, which is then cut into slices.

Every Thursday farmers and other local businessmen offer their fresh ware on the farmer's market at the Rathausplatz and the market in Vorst. In summer there are numerous opportunities to enjoy a drink in the sun, which can be extended through the range of beer gardens well into the evening without any problems. Tönisvorst is also a little bit famous: the town actually has an entry in the Guiness Book of Records. Here starts the world's longest tram network. In addition the town houses Europe's biggest medicine aid organisation, namely action medeor.
