Kempen is a popular destination for people from near and far. Many cyclists from the region come to Kempen on weekends. They enjoy while sitting under sycamore trees on the Butter Market refreshing beverages, ice cream and regional specialities.

The historical old town of Kempen has many distinctive landmarks:

  • The Kurkölnische Landesburg, built around 1316
  • The Kuhtor built 1350
  • Alte Schulstraße (photo right) with half-timbered houses from 1600 to 1608.

Further historical buildings are situated in the villages:

Tönisberg
The smock mill, built 1802

St. Hubert
The rural peel 'Berfes' at the Raveshof, built in the 16th-century

Schmalbroich
The house Velde, knight seat of the former Electorate Cologne Amt Kempen, built in the 13th-century

On the private website "Min Kempe" - the nostalgic website of the Thomas town Kempen at the Lower Rhine - you'll find lots of historical and nee photos of Kempen.

The Kurkölnische Landesburg (conservation to palace by adding large windows in 1634) was built at the instigation of the Cologne archbishop Friedrich III of Saarwerden from 1396 to 1400. With its three towers in a park with large, old sweet chestnuts it is considered a landmark of the city.
