The town Nettetal is situated on the Lower Rhine in the heart of the nature reserve Maas-Schwalm-Nette in close proximity to the Netherlands and comprises of six districts, which consists of separate villages:

- Breyell
- Hinsbeck
- Kaldenkirchen
- Leuth
- Lobberich
- Schaag

The town Nettetal has to thank the little stream Nette for its name. The Nette flows through the town on a length of more than 12 kilometres. The Nette is roughly 28 kilometres long. The stream's source is in Dülken and meanders between Lobberich and Breyell, then between Hinsbeck and Leuth to Wachtendonk, where it flows into the Niers river.

The Krickenbecker Lakes are four lakes, which resulted from development of peat deposits:

  • Hinsbecker Bruch
  • Glabbacher Bruch (photo above)
  • Poelvenn
  • Schrolik

The name affixes 'Bruch' and '-Venn' point to an earlier characteristic as fen resp bog.

Krickenbeck Palace

The palace was built around the middle of the 13th-century as important Lower Rhenish moated castle. In 1904 after a fire the three-winged facility in neo-Renaissance-forms were constructed from the remnants of the old palace. Part of the building monument is the two-level three-winged outer bailey from 1695. In the year 1673 it passed into the hands of Earl von Schaesberg. Apart from the importance as building and art monument Krickenbeck Palace is as the centre of the same-named Amt an important historical place, which was first mentioned in 1305. It forms together with Landsberg and Merode a special group of selected Rhenish castles in the course of the 19th-century. Krickenbeck Palace constitutes a complex and broad monument of Rhenish art and history. Unfortunately sightseeing is not possible.
