Bicycle route - Schwalm Valley, valley of the mills

The bicycle tour starts in Niederkrüchten-Overhetfeld at the chapel St.Maria, An der Heiden. Go on the traces of the mill-industry in the Schwalmbruch. The Schwalm Valley is known as the 'Valley of the windmill'. Along the river Schwalm there are still numerous mills, which milled grains or produced oils from flax seeds in the past.

Cyclists start on the Europe-Route direction pature landscape Dilborner Benden. A detour leads to the Dilborner Mill. The mill wheel is situated inside the residence. This way the mill was able to operate well into winter. Cyclists cross over the Schwalm and reach the Brüggener Mill (photo right). The mill belonged to Brüggen castle once. Today the mill wheel produces energy for the attached restaurant.
Then the route takes the cyclists through the picturesque Brüggener village centre and lovely marshland to the Borner Mill.
This mill was still in operation until the mid 19th-century. Today it is being used as a hotel and restaurant. From the Borner Lake cyclists cycle along the Schwalmtaler circular path direction south to the Harik Lake.

The Harik Lake is one of the prettiest local recreation areas in the district Viersen. In the north is the Mühlrather Mill situated (photo left). The grain and oil mill was used by the owner also as a sawmill. The mill still has two preserved mill wheels.
Now the tour runs past the island castle in the direction of Brempt. Cyclists pass by the Brempter chapel St. Georg. There at the wayside is the Brempter Mill situated. It was a grain mill last and is now a residence. The origin of this mill goes back tot he 16th-century. Soon the cyclists reach the village centre of Niederkrüchten with its late-Gothic parish church St. Bartholomäus. The next mill station after the Schwalm bridge is the Pannen- Mill. It was the most important oil mill at the river Schwalm. Today the mill serves as a restaurant.

In the Schwalmbruch appears the Lüttelforster Mill (photo left). Its origin goes back to the year 1300. Until 1953 it had as one of the last Schwalm mills the dam-right. The fish pass there has existed since 2008. A detour to the church St. Jakob and to the picturesque Waldhufen housing estate is well worth it. Coming from the 'Valley of mills' cyclists will cross the Lüttelforster Forest and cycle past the Lousberg. Once again the river Schwalm has to be crossed and via Felderhausen and Oberkrüchten the way goes back to Elmpt. the last leg of the around 30 kilometres long mill-route runs over the Lower Rhine Route.
